Present Status of Canonry of Jamtara

St. Norbert Abbey Jamtara
St. Norbert Priory, the First House of the Norbertine Order, was started at Jamtara, in the suburbs of Jabalpur Town. The Novitiate was established at Jamtara, Jabalpur in 1962. St. Norbert Priory at Jamtara, Jabalpur was raised to the status of Sub- Canonry on July 31,1976 and declared as an Autonomous Canonry on the February 15, 1984.
October 7, 2000 was once again a red-letter day for the Norbertine Canonry in India. On this day, St. Norbert Priory was elevated to the status of “St. Norbert Abbey” and The Rt. Rev. Nicholas A. Ambrose, O. Praem became the first Abbot and received his Abbatial Blessing on November 13, 2000.
The Rt. Rev. Rocky D’Souza, O. Praem was elected as the second Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey, Jamtara on August 1, 2003 and he received his Abbatial Blessing on September 17, 2003. He is also elected as Definitor of the Order at the General Chapter- 2006.
St. Norbert Abbey, today has 89 solemn professed confreres/ priests and 41 students in training. The priests are ministering in 11 dioceses (six states) across India, namely, Jabalpur, Indore, Kollam, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Khunti, Sivagangai, Trichy, Thrissur, and Varanasi. They are involved in different Pastoral, educational, developmental, social work, formation and communication.
